Vital Information on Jatamansi (Nardostachys) :
In Atharva Parişista Mamsi is denoted as Soubhagyajanana and Vasikarana. Sounaka quoted it as Soumanasyajanana.
Sāyana considered Nalada as Uśira probably, he might have intended to indentify it with Naladī. In Caraka 
Samhita Māmsī term is used while Jatā term is used by Suśruta and Vāgbhata. It is important to note that 
Jatamamsi term was not used in Brhat Trayi texts. It appears that Bhavamiśra introduced the synonym Jatamāmsī.
Jatāmāmsi is traditionally known for its role in insomnia, mental disorders and infectious conditions. 
Caraka indicated it for vişa rogas, Aśmari, Apasmara, Unamada, Vatarakta, Śvāsa, Kasa etc., along with 
various other drugs. Suśruta advocated that it should be worn on the head in the Vrana management.

Therapeutic Uses of Jatamansi (Nardostachys):
(1) Kuştha- Pūtīka, Devadāru, Mamsī, Indravārunī, Guduci, Mudgaparnī and Kākanāsa are made as paste applied locally
(2) Keśa Vardhana- Mamsī, Kuştha, Tila, Sarivā and Nilotpala are made into paste by mixing with milk and honey. 
                   It is applied externally (A.H.Ut.24)
(3) Vatarakta- After sirāvy adhana, paste of Madhuka, Aśvatha tvak, Mamsi, Virā, Udumbara and Dürva 
               should be applied
Dosage of Jatamansi (Nardostachys) :
Powder 1gms to 3 gms.
