Vital Information on Nimba (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) :
In the vedic literature Nimba is deline ated several times. But its stem is not recommended for rituals
but used as tooth brush. Caraka delineated Nimba under Kandüghna drugs (anti-pruritic drugs).
Kaidarya mentioned among the Sañjnasthapana dravyas is considered to be Parvata Nimba according to Cakrapani.
Caraka used the flowers of Nimba for Sirovirecana (Nasya). He indicated it for the external use in skin diseases
also. Suśruta prescribed it in Mutraghata (Urinary obstruction) treatment alongwith other plants.
Vagbhata described its seed oil as very effective in the treatment of grey-hair and hair fall as nasal
drops for one month (with milk).
It is also quoted as a Vamana dravya (emetic) by Caraka etc. Among Pañca Tiktas (five bitters),
Nimba mula Tvak (root barkof Neem) is mentioned.
Indications of Nimba (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) :
Jvara, Kuştha, Krmi, Prameha, Vrana, Kāsa, Chardi, Vişa roga, Arśa, Gulma, Neta rogas, Kandu.
Therapeutic Uses of Nimba (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) :
(1) Sitapitta - Nimba leaves and Amalakī dried fruit are mixed with ghee and given regularly
(2) Surāmeha - Decoction of Nimba is a specific remedy
(3) Jvara - The leaves, root, fruits and bark of Neem are mixed with ghee and fumigation is given
(4) Kuştha - Nimba and Patola together are used in different forms
Dosage of Nimba (Azadirachta indica A. Juss) :
Bark powder 2gms to 4 gms, fresh juice 10ml to 20 ml, seed oil 5 drops to 10 drops.
